Asia Domain Name Registration scam

Just spreading the word about a scam email I received. See the Bloptimization blog for an explanation and don’t be taken in. Here’s how it started:

I emailed them back, confirming ownership of mppllc.com and received this reply:

Dear  Sir,
>
> We understand your meaning, and it is our responsibility to inform you. We
> knew you have registered the domain name “mppllc.com” and own the

As you can probably guess, the “Domain name&Internet brand keyword Disputed Applicication form” is not a dispute form at all, but an order form, with exorbitant rates to register domains. Here’s the price list:

Single registration fee:
(.cn/.com.cn/.net.cn/.org.cn)Domain name:160USD/ 5 Years Per Name
(.hk/.tw)  Domain name:405USD/ 5 Years Per Name
(.mobi) Domain name:320USD/ 5 Years Per Name
(.cc) Domain name:340USD/ 5 Years Per Name
(.asia)  Domain name:840USD/ 5 Years Per Name
.Internet brand keyword: 705EUR/ 5 Years Per Name

And of course that gave it away right there.

I don’t think these scammers will score too many hits because they are just too greedy. They’d probably make more money by charging a “dispute resolution processing fee” or some other kind of innocuous service charge rather than going for the big score.

    They are still active…

    Just got one today:

    Dear CEO/Manager,

We are a domain name registration center in HongKong, mainly dealing with domain name registration and internet intellectual property rights protection. On Aug 20, 2009 we received a formal application from a company who is applying to register several domains, using “asuta” as the internet keyword. After investigation, we find that you are the original user of the keyword. Such similar domain cases may involve your company name or trade mark, and may cause website confusion and conflicts. For a responsible attitude, we inform you here and your opinion, in order to deal with this issue better, please contact us by email or telephone ASAP.

    Looking forward to your reply.

I just got this email and these idiots are telling me the same thing. This scam is all about scaring you into buying other domain names in China. Don’t fall for this scam! If you own the domain name… no one else can sell it. They are trying to get you to buy .com, .net, and all of the domain names that could be associated to your domain name. But, they are trying to sell domain names that end in XXX.com.cn …
all of the domain names are in China with this email I just received.

Thanks for the heads up! I also got this email. I figured it was trash but had never heard of this scam before. So I googled it and was glad to come to this blog for confirmation.

I was a skeptical person before the internet…now I’m even more so. Not really an endearing trait, but I prefer it to being gullible.

Our business, an Internet marketing services provider, received two emails from “Jason Fang” today. While investigating what felt like a scam to fool businesses into registering additional domains names that they don’t need, this site came up in search results for the phone number provided in the scam email signature:

Thanks for maintaining this post to warn other businesses marketing on the Internet to beware these kind of scam artists, who based on the date of the original post and early comments, have been at this game for a while.

Unfortunately, those that don’t research these kinds of unsolicited offers can and do become victims, wasting precious marketing budget on registering domain names unnecessarily.

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten one of these scam notes but here’s a new one that just came in.

(It’s very urgent, so please transfer this email to your CEO or appropriate person. Thanks a lot.)

    Dear CEO/Principal,

We are the department of Asian Domain Registration Service in China. Here I have something to confirm with you. We formally received an application on January 4, 2013 that a company claimed “Toptelly Company ” were applying to register “mppllc” as their Net Brand and some “mppllc” Asian countries top-level domain names through our firm.

If you authorized this, we would finish the registration at once. If you did not authorize, please let us know within 7 workdays, so that we could handle this issue better. After the deadline we will unconditionally finish the registration for “Toptelly Company ” Looking forward to your prompt reply.
